Getting
started: Searching
the BMD Indexes for England & Wales (1984 onwards) by surname: |

- Enter the surname in the Surname
field.
- Enter the range of years
that you want to include in your search (narrowing the
years' range will improve the searching time).
- Choose the type of record you want to
look for by checking the Births, Deaths or Marriages radio
button.
- Click on the "Search" button.
- A "searching" notification
will appear next to the search button until the search has
been completed.
- The results will be displayed as a colour coded
map and a table containing the
number of results for each county.
- To view the name of a particular county
on the map, move your mouse over that county.
The county name will be displayed in the top right
corner of the page.
- To view the name of the county corresponding
to a particular code in the table, move
your mouse over the county code. The county name will be
displayed in the top right corner of the
table.
- To make another search, click on the
Reset button.
- To print the map, follow the instructions
below.
There is a deduction of 20 credits per search made. These searches
can be printed out or saved as an image for future reference
by following the instructions below. |

| Printing
the map on paper: |
Click on the
"Print this map" button at the bottom/right corner
of the page.
This will open your printer settings box:

- Select your printer
(1).
- Click on the Preferences
button (2).
- This will open the Printing Preferences
menu:
- In the Orientation box,
select "Landscape" (3).
- Click on the OK button
to close that menu.
- Finally, click on the Print
button at the bottom of the Print menu. Your page will be
scaled to fit the size of the paper.
Saving
the map as a digital image:
- If you wish to save
the image as a digital file (GIF, JPEG, BMP..)
press the Print Screen key on your keyboard.
This will copy the whole screen image in your computer's clipboard.
- Open your favourite image editing program
paste the contents of your clipboard as a
new document.
- Crop the image to remove any
unwanted elements and save your
file in the format of your choice.
