New and updated indexes

Today we added the current state of the indexing project for the Cambridgeshire 1861 indexes.

We also updated the Devon 1861 and Durham 1871 indexes to the current state of the project.

New and updated indexes

We have completed the project for the 1851 census for Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and Oxfordshire — indexes and transcripts available.

In the last week we have added the current state of the indexing project for Surrey 1871 and Cumberland 1861 indexes.

The Lancashire and Berkshire 1871 indexes have been updated to include the latest data from the indexing project.

Essex 1851 and Hampshire 1851 transcripts now have linked online images of the original census pages.

Knights of England

Search for your knighted ancestors back to 1127!

This is the definitive two-volume publication, described in the frontispiece as "A Complete Record from the Earliest Time [1127] to the Present Day [1904] of the Knights of all the Orders of Chivalry in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of Knights Batchelors."

You can search for names or other words, and can then view the page on which they were found. You can also move five pages forwards or backwards through the book from the page you are shown.

New Search Features

We are adding two useful search features to as many of our indexes and transcripts as possible:

Name Variants

Use this option to search for different spellings of a name. For example, Bailey and Bayley. This technique uses the phonetical sound of the word to find similar sounding matches.

Nicknames

Use this option to search for nicknames which may have been used instead of the standard name - for example Betty, Betsy, Beth or Liz for Elizabeth.

Indexes which have these features will show a checkbox alongside the appropriate name entry fields so you can include them if you wish.

NEW! Parish Records for London

We have now added our London Parish Records. They are included for no extra cost in the premium subscriptions. Alternatively you can purchase a pay-as-you-go subscription from £19.95.

Parish Records started in 1538 when Thomas Cromwell, the Vicar General to King Henry VIII, declared that all marriages, christenings and burials should be recorded. This data proves invaluable for research prior to census and BMD records.
