WW1 Daily Casualty Lists 1914 - 1920
On September 1st 1914 the War Office issued the first report of casualties sustained in the war. Many
newspapers reprinted these lists, with these records coming from one of the most dependable.
In mid 1917, and with full casualty lists now being published by HMSO, the newspapers scaled back their
reporting of all those who were wounded and began only reporting wounded officers.
WW1 War Office Weekly Casualty List 1917 - 1918
On August 7th 1917 Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO) began publishing a weekly list of casualties.
HMSO realised the demand for an accurate and comprehensive list of those killed, wounded, missing and
captured in the Great War.
WW2 War Office Casualty Lists 1939 - 1947
Sourced from collection WO 417 held at The
National Archives, these documents contain records from the war years of 1939 to 1947 and list casualties
sustained by the British Army during the Second World War. There are volumes for Officers and Nurses, with
separate volumes for Other Ranks. The Casualty Lists were compiled from daily lists that had been prepared
by
the War Office Casualty Section and cover the various expeditionary forces deployed in different locations
across Europe, Africa and Asia as well as for personnel at home.
