Map Explorer launched
TheGenealogist’s latest innovation helps you find an ancestor’s property and watch the landscape change over time. The team has georeferenced its Lloyd George Maps for Greater London which are available at launch, with further exciting developments planned for the coming months.
TheGenealogist’s Map Explorer displays maps for different historical periods up to the modern day. The Base Layer shows modern OS, Bing or OpenStreetMap data; the Historic Layer can be used to select a range of OS maps from the 1890s to the 1960s; and the Record Set Layer provides access to map record sets such as the Lloyd George Domesday, or the soon-to-be-launched georeferenced tithe maps. This layer also has the ability to show pins that link directly to the records so you can see who was living in a particular property. The maps are fully searchable by county, parish, street and even postcode. Further tools let you see county and parish boundaries. Find out more and watch the video here .
Speakers announced for the 2019 Family History Shows
Plans are hotting up for this year’s Discover Your Ancestors Family History Shows, which take place in three locations this summer: York on 22 June; the new south-west show in Bristol show on 6 July; and Sandown Park near London on 24 August.

Each show will have two lecture areas with free talks given by various expert independent speakers. The speakers include:
- Genealogist and house historian Gill Blanchard (at all three shows)
- DNA expert Debbie Kennett (at York and Bristol)
- Fashion and photography expert Jayne Shrimpton (at York and London)
- Military historian Chris Baker (at Bristol and London)
- Sport and social historian Keith Gregson (at York).
The extremely popular face-to-face Ask the Experts section will be run at all three shows, and we’re expanding this area to cover your questions on DNA, dating photographs, medals, military service and research problems. So don’t forget to bring your ancestors’ medals, records and photos along! There will also be new Q&A panel sessions.
